This week I met up with the Dyslexic Postcards to discuss porn, death and most importantly their plans for the near future, including music videos and a brand new record!
If you were making a porno, what would it be called and would it have a specific plot?
Josh Xmas (Lead Vocals/Guitar): ‘Thar She Blows.’ It would be on pirate ship, everyone would be wearing eye patches, a parrot would be narrating and quoting Henry Miller, and I’d cast an elderly sailor with a peg leg to stand in the corner and shout encouraging words at the actors.
Xaxier (Bass guitar): Our porn would be called “Sexdaily Postcards.” There really wouldn’t be a specific plot, just 90 minutes of “wrong hole sex.” Some argue that there is no wrong hole.
JoeSmooth (Drums/Back vocals): “Saving Ryan’s Parts” A group of medical soldiers go into hostile territory to save their wounded friend & recover his penis, preventing it from being devoured by Nazi “Dick Eating” women soldiers.
What’s the inspiration behind ‘Give me reason to die’?
JoeSmooth: That’s Josh’s territory.
Xavier: Uhhh…. that’s Josh’s question. [laughs]
Josh Xmas: “Give Me Reason to Die” is essentially a call to a theoretical partner to put up or shut up instead of just saying the words “I love you” I’m asking them to prove it, to show me they’re the kind of person that I would put my life on the line for.
If you could co-operate with any band or artist, who would it be and why?
Josh Xmas: Obviously, we have certain musical influences but I don’t want to name- drop here and give them free publicity off our backs – if they want public praise from me they’re gonna have to work for it…you know, like some retweets or a fruit basket, something like that. [Laughs]
Xavier: I think it would be good if we could tour with bands that match our energy.
As far as new bands go, I have no idea, but Talking Heads, PIL, The Cult, and Violent Femmes (just to name a few.) Maybe Sonic Youth…
JoeSmooth:… and The Flaming Lips. They seem to have freedom from the record company to record/ release what they want.
If you could choose how you die, what would be your way to go?
Josh Xmas: In bed with my girlfriend after a marathon sex session. [Grins]
JoeSmooth: Death by a “Stunt Double”… that way my fans can always see me go out in a blaze of glory.
Xavier: Heart attack while acting in the last scene of “Sex Daily Postcards,” very theatrical!
Walk me through the creative process of the making of your latest EP ‘Spare the Altar’.
Josh Xmas: We don’t really have a process, as a songwriter I write down what I’m feeling at the moment. I don’t have a problem writing music, I’ll put lyrics to it and then bounce it off the band and see if it clicks. It’s all about the music – I don’t try to stress about finishing the lyrics beforehand because I might go back and change things if they don’t jive with what we’re all trying to go for as a band. The title of the EP kind of lends itself to my “process” so to speak because there’s no set formula to it, no set rules, it doesn’t conform to some accepted or expected norm – it’s a raw, anti- establishment approach to creating music.
Xavier: ummm… Trial, error… and weed?
What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see next?
Josh Xmas: We’ve got a North American tour coming up and right we’ll be filming some music videos for the songs “Give Me Reason To Die” and “So So Lover”. I won’t give away too much because I want to keep an element of surprise.
Xavier: Plus, we’re currently working on Sweet Science, which is going to be our next record. This one is a little heavier, but still radio friendly. Rock ‘n’ Roll you’d expect from us…
Josh Xmas: …Which we’re planning on debuting in a unique way that will hopefully reach a wide audience, impress our fans and attract even more of them, so stay tuned!
